I love the Prophetic!

I love the Prophetic! It’s an amazing thing to hear His voice first in my own spirit and through His Body. It’s so confirming and validating when God speak the same thing through different people who don’t know each other. It’s like God’s public recognition of your private relationship. Reminds me of what Matthew 6:6 says

But you, when you pray, enter into your closet and lock your door, and pray to your father who is in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you in public.

It’s beautiful when the Father honors you with His Words for they are life. You know what the word Promise means? In Hebrew it means: dabar – speech, word, speaking, thing. In Greek it means: epaggelia – announcement. So when God speaks it is always in promise. But the promise sometimes in subject to our submission to it.

So several months back a woman from my church had a message and several words for people in the congregation. I was the first one she spoke to and she had a dream and told me it. It was awesome. Another guest speaker, Wendy Backlund, had a word for me and this time I was the last one. It also was a powerful word. Then, someone I don’t know, randomly Facebook messaged me a word…and it was spot on and combined both the other words together! It’s like God saying, “Well done.” It’s an amazing feeling when God recognizes you. I know some don’t believe in this stuff but I don’t judge them based on lack of experience. Some, unfortunately have been injured and wounded by immaturity in this error. Wrong prophecy isn’t false prophecy…it is prophecy in training. God is working on us! That is why in the Old Testament times they had schools of prophets. Kinda of like Samuel hearing the voice of God and not recognizing it until Eli taught him (1 Samuel 3:9). We criticize new people in the prophetic and label them false but if a pastor or evangelist isn’t perfect then what?

As believers and sons of God we are a prophetic people. We hear His Voice and follow Him. 1 Thessalonians 5:20 says

Do not despise prophetic utterances.

And 1 Timothy 4:14 says

14 Do not neglect the spiritual gift within you, which was bestowed on you through prophetic utterance with the laying on of hands by the presbytery.

Notice this prophecy wasn’t used to complete the Bible, as some say prophecy was designed for. This prophecy was used to bestow a spiritual gift on Timothy by the laying on of hands. Timothy didn’t write Scripture. So why then did he need a prophecy?

There is a difference between the office of a prophet and gift of prophecy but I don’t feel the need to get into that today.

Some of mystified hearing God’s voice but the fact that some abuse a gift doesn’t negate its original design. There can only be a counterfeit if there is a real. So when you ask God for bread He won’t give you a stone…because some like to cast the first one they get. I am one of his sheep and I hear His voice and I follow Him and He confirms what has already been planted and watered in my heart and spirit and He will give the increase. Until the complete stature of Christ is manifest in His Bride these gifts and Offices are still needed. We still need Pastors, Teachers, and Evangelist so we still need Apostles and Prophets. Oh and by the way…without Love the whole shebang is worthless and white noise or a clanging symbol! Just like the Priests robe has bells and fruit(Ex. 28:34), we need both to operate all things in love. The gift of prophecy lines up with the fruit of goodness and it’s the goodness of God that leads to repentance.

Amen and amen! Glory to God in the highest!

  1. Something that I feel should be expressed is that there is a big difference between the prophetic gift and the prophetic office. God takes it very seriously when someone will put a “thus saith the Lord” upon their speech. To misspeak is to take His name in vain, which is why Deuteronomy 13 commands that anyone who prophesies falsely should be put to death. I don’t think we are sober enough about this subject. While I agree that the prophetic gift is an endtime provision from God, the differentiation between the gift and call is vital. The prophetic gift is exactly as it says: a gift. It can come upon anyone who the Holy Spirit desires to give it. But the prophet is an office. The prophet is a foundation to the Church, and if we have people who are simply gifted but call themselves prophets, then the whole of the Church has a faulty foundation.

The reason I bring this up is because I’m hesitant of your wording. “Wrong prophecy isn’t false prophecy…it is prophecy in training. God is working on us! That is why in the Old Testament times they had schools of prophets.” You mention later that there is a difference between the prophetic call and the gift of prophecy, but I guess I’m failing to see the differentiation in that statement quoted. Also, if wrong prophecy is not false prophecy, then how would you define false prophecy?

I hope this doesn’t sound like a rebuke or an attack. You just so happened to write about one of the subjects that I deeply reverence. I’m glad that God has spoken to you, and I hope that He continues to do so. May the dust be licked up by the fire that falls from your words. And may God honor that prayer that you have prayed for His glory. And may God grant it that we shall see one another’s face in Zion.

    Your beloved brother,
    Tommy

    1. Yes there is a big difference and one who is called the Office but do so with the reverential awe of the Lord. False leads people away from the Lord to the enemy and wrong is simply mishearing or hearing in part. When one prophesies let two or three judge. We learn and practice hearing his voice (Heb. 5:14) The old testament also says in Deut. 18:22 to not fear or be alarmed because they did is presumptuously. I do agree that there are many who proclaim the title but have never been commissioned for the office. There is little teaching about the proper roles. I try to keep my posts short and to the point. One can’t declare the full counsel of God in one post or many…it took the Bible 66 books to do so. We are learning and need a safe place. Another thing to keep in mind is the many words don’t come to pass due to repentance and turning back to the Lord. Others come to pass but differently then we expect. Thank you so much for the comment, sharpening, and rebuke because we wise men love them 🙂

      1. Forgive me this one more time, because your use of Deuteronomy 18:22 seemed a little bit misleading. Two verses earlier, Moses said that if someone speaks for God when God hasn’t spoken they are to die, and so the context of not fearing the prophet who prophesies falsely is that the Lord has given them into your hand to judge. Obviously, I don’t condone killing the false prophets today, but the point is still quite sharp. If God is that solemn about His word, then maybe we should be too. Grace and peace, dear brother.

  2. Interesting conversation you’re having here. 🙂 Totally understand on not being able to give the full counsel in a blog post. I won’t be able to either in my comment. So, briefly, besides the difference between office and gifting, there’s a huge difference between Old Testament (OT) prophets and New Testament (NT) prophets, especially prophecy in the normal church setting. There’s a lot of misunderstanding here. We cannot apply the OT to us indiscriminately, but it must go through the Cross and the giving of the Holy Spirit. For instance, in the OT, a prophet was the only way God’s people heard from Him directly, so the punishment for “missing it” was death. But this is NOT true in the NT. We ALL hear from God (John 10:4-5), so we can confirm it in our spirit. Missing it is not a capital offense because we all have the Holy Spirit. The prophet is not judged under the NT, the spirit of the word is judged (1 John 4:1). But most importantly, the NT clearly encourages us ALL to prophesy, but it’s be done for the edification of the church (1 Cor.14:31) We follow the 1 Cor.14:26 admonition when we gather.

I love the prophetic too! God’s thoughts toward us being expressed to us confirmed by our spirit. Great post! Blessings.

  3. Thanks for dropping by and I appreciate this good post and discussion.
So I’m dipping into yours and note you too get triple ‘co-incidence’ or God-incidents, as I designate the Lord’s confirmations. (Hence that tab on my blog.)
